Insurance Terminology to Understand your Health Plan
Premium
the insurance fee you pay either on a monthly/quarterly, or annual basis.
Deductible
the fixed amount individuals must pay each year before the insurance company starts covering medical expenses.
i.e. If your deductible is $2,000 and you have medical expenses of $200 you’ll pay $200 and have a remaining deductible of $1,800
i.e. If your deductible is $2,000 and you have medical expenses of $3,000 you’ll pay $2,000 and the insurer will pay $1,000.
Coinsurance
a medical cost-sharing system where the policyholder bears a portion of the medical expenses and the insurance company pays the rest.
i.e. If your coinsurance is 90% and you have medical expenses of $100 you’ll pay 90% and the insurer will pay 10%
Copay (copayment)
the amount you pay each time you visit a doctor or medical facility (The amount paid each time you use your insurance).
Out-of-Pocket
refers to the annual maximum amount a policyholder is responsible for paying. Once you reach the maximum, this includes deductible, copayment, and coinsurance, the insurer will cover the remaining expenses.
